RECE

(Red 15 JUL 07

Telegram from Sir J. Jordan, Peking, No.136, dated

July 10th, 1907.

I have received a report from His Majesty's

Consul General at Canton stating that on July 6th

the British launch was the victim of a piratical at-

tack about nine miles from Canton. The total losses

of launch, crew and passengers amount to about 400

dollars; no lives were lost. He has asked for my

support in pressing energetically for the immediate

payment of the claim, and I have given him my author-

isation to do so.

Further, I have informed the Wai-wu Pu that I

shall be obliged to place the case in the hands of

His Majesty's Government unless immediate steps are

taken for the satisfaction of the claims and the

arrest of the pirates.

In my opinion vigorous action is justified on

this occasion by the persistent neglect, which the

Chinese Government have displayed in enforcing the

scheme
