SEOTION 1.

(No. 208.) Sir,

Sir Edward Grey to Sir J. Jordan.

Foreign Office, May 21, 1907.

I HAVE received your despatch No. 554 of the 27th December last, inclosing a translation of a note from Prince Ch'ing on the subject of the Namting-Nalawl section of the Burma-China boundary.

I now transmit to you a copy of a letter from the India Office, forwarding a proposal from the Government of India for the adoption of a compromise in regard to that portion of the boundary in return for the full acceptance by the Chinese Govern- ment of the Salween Shweli-Irrawaddy watershed as the boundary further north.

A clear idea of the nature of the Government of India's proposals will be obtained by an examination of the maps, of which copies are inclosed herewith, and especially of that marked (C). It has been ascertained that by "Scott's line" it is intended to indicate the red line on map (C).

I shall be glad if you will report to me whether you consider that the Chinese Government are likely to entertain favourably a proposal for the settlement of the whole frontier on the terms suggested, hearing in mind the observations made in the last two paragraphs of the India Office lettes.

I am, &c. (Signed) E. GREY.
