I received a visit yesterday from Prince Eung and

some of the remanke which he made. Although of no strik-

ing importance in themselves, may not be without interest

to you as an indication of the views hold by prominent

young Chinese of a progrannive type.

His Highness is the grandson of the Prince of the

same name who concluded the Ironty of Tientsin with Lord

Elgin and was for many years afterwards the loading

otatesman of China. He beare a marked resemblance to his

Zandfather and has the frankness of apeech and decision

of manner which characterized the elder atateaman, The

Prince spoke very freely of the Roxer movement and is

the only Chinese of any standing who has voluntarily

bronched the subject in conversation with me. Even
