Sir,
No. 1.
Sir Edward Grey to Wang Tasich,
Foreign Office, February 7, 1907. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 25th ultimo, and to thank you for the translation inclosed therein of certain proposals which you have received from the Wai-wu Pu for the gradual abolition of the opium trade in China.
I am unable to express any definite opinion in regard to these proposals until I am in possession of the views of the Government of India in regard to them, but the matter is engaging the serious attention of His Majesty's Government, who are already in communication with His Majesty's Minister at Peking and with the Government of India on the subject.
I have, &c. (Signed)
E. GREY.
