ALGE 31 JAN 07: FOREIGN OFFICE

I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknow-

of the 15th instant ledge the receipt of your letter 1150/1906-1907, rela-

tive to the claim of 0 Yung against the United States

Government on account of the destruction of his junk

by a collision with a United States Collier.

In reply I am to state that as the Colonial Au-

thorities in causing the action brought by 0 Yung to

be dismissed, acted on the request of, and on the re-

presentations of fact made by the American naval offi-

cers, His Majesty's Government would appear to be

justified in asking the United States Government to

provide the plaintiff with other means of redress.

It would however materially strengthen the case,

>

if it could be shown that 0 Yung was a British subject,

and I am to request that Lord Elgin will in the first

he Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
