It seems to us to be a question to be determined on

the spot whether it is wise now to incur the expense of Cuttings

wide enough for a double line of track. No doubt the extra

width can be provided now more cheaply and conveniently than

when the line is open for traffic, when the use of explosives is

particularly objectionable. But looking to the meagre estimates

of traffic now prepared it would seem that many years will elapse before widening is a necessity, and in view of the large exces8

of the present estimates it may be wiser to defer the expenditure

and let the future take care of itself.

In conclusion we would point out that we have found

it very difficult to compare the two estimates under discussion

in detail, owing to the considerable additional works which have

been undertaken and to the alterations in alignment which have

been found necessary.

We enclose a revised copy of the Chief Resident

Engineer's report and detailed estimate,

We are, Gentlemen,

For

Your obedient servants,

SIR JOHN WOLFE BARRY & PARTNERS,
