It seems to us to be a question to be determined on
the spot whether it is wise now to incur the expense of Cuttings
wide enough for a double line of track. No doubt the extra
width can be provided now more cheaply and conveniently than
when the line is open for traffic, when the use of explosives is
particularly objectionable. But looking to the meagre estimates
of traffic now prepared it would seem that many years will elapse before widening is a necessity, and in view of the large exces8
of the present estimates it may be wiser to defer the expenditure
and let the future take care of itself.
In conclusion we would point out that we have found
it very difficult to compare the two estimates under discussion
in detail, owing to the considerable additional works which have
been undertaken and to the alterations in alignment which have
been found necessary.
