passed through necessitating very high banks and deep

cuttings.

As in most of the cuttings it is necessary to

have a good deal of blasting, I have taken out all cuttings for double lines, and where ever the material excavated is in excess of the singl line Bank, I

A

have made the bank for double line also.

The Reclamation from the sea of a site for

Kowloon Station Yard with the necessary sea wall accounts for $700,000.

There is also a rather heavy item for drainage

works in the Reclamation for the Station Yard. A

large intercepting sewer as well as a storm water drain has to be built along Des Voeux Road. The

sewer has its outfall near Plackhead's Point and the

storm water drain is carried in a 10 ft. culvert

under the station yard opposite Granville Poad.

There is also a heavy retaining wall in cutting No.4 to avoid the long slopes necessitated by an

open cutting. The cost of a tunnel at this point

was found to be too great. In connection with this see my General Letter No.29 dated 3rd May paragraph 20, Beyond this point most of the banks are made

with spoil from the tunnel.

From the North Face of the tunnel to the Tai Wai

River the work is heavy on account of the long lead across the valley through which this river rims.

No borrow pite can be dug here as the valley is

liable to heavy floods the water being some times

3 or 4 ft. above ground level, when the flood comes

during a high tide.
