Vol.00 and its dependencies...
of one setting per day, namely 3′ 8′′. The ground is good, but very wet. The length at present is 60′.
14.
In the shaft, the heading is progressing very slowly, as a boulder was met at the start which has given great trouble, as great care had to be taken when blasting it so close to the pump.
Dynamite has not been very successful with the rock so far. The headings are about 6 ft. in one side and 4 ft. in the other side.
Other works on the line are progressing well, but there is still a scarcity of the better class of labour, especially for the tunnel. A large proportion of Indian labour has still to be used, as the local Chinamen will not go into the shaft or heading.
Yours truly,
(Signed) G. W. Eves.
Chief Resident Engineer.
