custom which led to an inordinate amount of breakage and loss, and a hopeless confusion between the Inventories of the two houses.
It is to be noted that of the $8,000 voted in the Estimates for 1904 for new furniture for Government House and Mountain Lodge only $388.63 were spent and that only $3,011.46 of the $4,000 voted in the Estimates for 1905 were spent.
It must be remembered that furniture deteriorates very rapidly in this climate especially at the Peak, and it would appear that it has been the practice for some time past only partially to replace articles which have been condemned and written off.
The sum of £448. 15s. 9d referred to by Your Lordship is included in the sum of $10,000 voted.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient, humble servant,
Manganes
Governor, &c.
