Referring to the concluding paragraph of Your Lordship's despatch No.233 of the 29th October last, I have the honour to inform you that on my arrival in the Colony I found both Government House and Mountain Lodge to be deficient of much of the ordinary and essential furniture, such as table-linen and table-chairs, &c., while the existing furniture, some of which (at Government House) is handsome and valuable, was for the most part in a general state of disrepair.
There were practically no carpets or curtains; a number of the iron bedsteads (which were of the commonest description) were so broken and rusted as to be past repair, and I learnt that my predecessor had been in the habit of moving the furniture from one house to the other when he had occasion to change his residence.
