THE RECENT PIRACY IN CANTON WATERS.

BRITISH GUNBOATS WITHDRAWN. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

HONG-KONG, JAN. 24.

The British gunboats have been withdrawn from the West River, and the patrolling, so admirably organized and so effective and tactful in operation since December 3, has ceased, all the conditions required by England before withdrawal having been complied with, including the payment of an indemnity. The British authorities are satisfied that steps will be taken by the Chinese admiral Li Chun to continue the system introduced by the British admiral, while the Canton Viceroy is making a serious effort by the redistribution of troops ashore to deal with the haunts where pirates take refuge. A large number of bad characters have been decapitated during the past few days.
