and had first to go to the Civil Hospital on Government business
then I had to see patients in both Kowloon and Yaumati, and to
arrange a matter with Dr. Macfarlane at his office; I left
Yaumati about 11.30, and proceeded to Shatin; on my way I called
at the Kowloon New Waterworks to see Mr. Hirst, the Overseer,
whom I had been treating for Malaria; on account of a bridge being washed away, I had to leave my ricksha on this side of the 7th. milestone, and this delayed me; my visit to the Tunnel North Face Camp included a visit to one of the bungalows on the top of the hill to the North of the Tai Po road, to see a European
I had under treatment in his quarters; I then returned to my ricksha, and proceeded to the Tunnel South Face Camp, where I discharged the ordinary duties waiting me there. I got back between four and five o'clock, having been going for close on eight hours without a break and without food of any kind. The sun on that day was broiling; the roads, cut up by the rain-storm that on Sunday followed the typhoon, jolted the ricksha much more than usual; and though I had had no tiffin I was too utterly tired to eat dinner. It was in these circumstances that at 6.30 p.m. I told Mr. Eves I could not start for Tai Po till
the morning.
I started on Wednesday morning, as arranged,
but was astonished to meet Dr. Aubrey at Lokloha on his way from Tai Po. On my expressing surprise that I had not been informed, Dr. Aubrey informed me that he had impressed on Mr. Eves that I should be told of the re-arrangement. No oversight therefore
occurred.
Dr. Aubrey confirmed the diagnosis I had made of Mr. Ross's case, and expressed the opinion that he should come in to the Civil Hospital, but informed me that no launch was available at Tai Po. I thereupon decided that for me to go on would be futile: I wrote to Mr. Ross from Lokloka that I would send a launch, and hurried back to see about it. I spoke
