the growth of these institutions. $3,500 has been provided for an additional storey to the Headmaster's quarters at the Victoria British School which are at present limited to two rooms. I have inserted $15,000 for a Market for the sale of European food at Kowloon on the recommendation of the Sanitary Board and in response to an appeal made by the leading residents of Kowloon who pointed to a rapidly increasing population largely dependent for its supplies on Hongkong Markets. The addition of a storey to Mount Gough Police Station ($9,500) is designed to provide a sanitorium at the Peak for the wives and families of members of the Force. I have estimated $10,000 for Staff Quarters at Taipo and have authorised the expenditure of an equal sum during the current year for the work which has been rendered urgent by the recent destruction by fire of the old matshed quarters occupied by the District Officer. Both the present substantive holders of the posts in the New Territories are married, and since even were one only of the two Officers married the house recently erected would be inadequate I consider it would be better to erect a second, than to continue to extemporise quarters. Plans of the various buildings are enclosed.
