By careful microscopic examination of the blood, spleen, bone marrow, etc., of the edible and the rock frog, it has been possible to follow out - up to a certain point - the full development of these parasites. One can see the Dactylosoma developing in the blood in a manner similar to that of the Haemosporomes. Further, another variety of development can be easily observed, corresponding with that described as belonging to the species Drepanidium ranarum, namely the ultimate formation of cysts, containing minute, seed-like sporozoites, which are eventually set free and invade other red blood corpuscles.
Attached are rough sketches of the forms of these parasites as found in the frogs' blood, and an attempt is also made to show their haemic cycle of development. The one - Figure No. 1 - is what is generally recognised.
