(Extract)

My Lord,

26853

I have the honour to acknowledge

Your Lordship's Despatch No. 165 of 2nd August, 1907,

relative to the presence of destitute British Indians in

Peru, and desiring me to take such action as may appear to

be necessary to prevent persons being induced by false

representations to emigrate from this Colony to Peru.

2.

There is no large body of British

Indians in this Colony from which emigrants could be

recruited. The Census return of 20th November, 1906,

gives the total British Indian population at 4,229 (an

increase of 322 on the previous year). Of this population

the males are employed in various ways in the Colony and

I am informed that there are few destitute Indians here.

3.

On receipt of Your Lordship's

Despatch under reply I enquired from the Consul for Peru

whether the Consular fee levied upon emigrants for Peru

THE EARL OF ELGIN, K.G.,
