June, 1903. This caused the collapse of the retaining wall
recently built and extended to a portion of the supported bank
further west. Mr. Wei Yuk proceeded to reconstruct the wall and
Copy on the 2nd. February, 1904, I addressed a letter to him
of which I enclose requesting him to extend the wall for the
full length of the bank. The work of reinstating and extending
the wall was completed about June, 1904, the extent of the wall
being indicated by pink colour on the tracing.
*
A third landslip occurred about the begin-
-ning of August, 1905. This carried away that portion of the
wall cross-hatched in blue on the tracing or so injured it as
to necessitate its demolition and reconstruction. On this
occasion I addressed a letter to Government on the subject
and, as the result of correspondence with Mr. Wei Yuk, a plan
for reinstating the damaged portion of the wall was, on the 5th.
September, deposited by Messrs. Weaser and Raven, Authorized
Architects. I approved of the plan on condition that the 4
buttresses, which are also cross-hatched in blue on the tracing,
were added and the work was carried out in due course. Permis-
-sion was granted in December for the construction of some
channels on the bank above the reinstated portion of the wall
subject to the reservation that the Government undertook no
responsibility for their maintenance or for anything arising out
of their construction.
The fourth landslip occurred on the 29th.
September, 1906, and this time the portions of the wall cross-
-hatched in red were destroyed.
I then wrote a letter, a copy of which I
enclose, to the lessee, who is the wife of Mr. Wei Yuk. I also
enclose the reply I received and a letter from the Manager of
the Mercantile Bank of India, Limited., who are the holders of
the First Mortgage over the lot.
With regard to the statement in Mr.
Ormiston's letter that the nullahs on Government land above
