My Lord,

Hongkong, 31st August, 1907.

With reference to my Despatch No. 205 of the 8th instant and to previous correspondence on the subject of the effect of the high exchange value of the Dollar on the emoluments of Officers whose salaries are fixed in Sterling or are paid at the rate of 3 shillings to the Dollar, I have the honour to transmit the enclosed copy of correspondence that has passed between the Chief Justice and myself regarding a representation Sir F. T. Piggott desires to make to Your Lordship on the subject of the comparison that may be drawn between the salaries of the Judge of the Supreme Court at Shanghai, and of the Chief Justice of this Colony.

2. Sir F. T. Piggott does not mention, and I myself am not aware, whether or not the Judge of the Supreme Court at Shanghai is entitled to a pension, and if so at what rate.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
THE EARL OF ELGIN, K.G.,
&c. &c. &c.

Page 363 (if it were at the bottom) should be kept as is for the page numbering information, but since the exact positioning (top or bottom) isn't specified in the provided snippet, and the content doesn't directly follow the described layout, the main body of the text has been formatted according to the guidelines. However, to adhere strictly to the output format requested (HTML using `
