With reference to paragraph 17 the facts

On the 11th. January I saw the Wardmaster concerning Dr. Moore's report of the 10th. January and told him that it would have to be reported to the Government.

I was instructed on the 15th. January to

ask Egerton whether he would accept dismissal or appear before

the Executive Council.

At my interview with him on the 17th.

January I reminded him that he had been severely reprimanded on

the 12th. December last for being absent from duty and that he

was then warned that any further neglect of duty would be more

seriously dealt with.

I referred to his having allowed this

patient to escape when he was on duty, and told him of the

decision of the Government. •

He said he would consider the matter.

The following day he sent in his resignation...

only it was worded in such a way that I could not forward it to

Government. I returned it to Dr. Moore telling him to inform

the Wardmaster that it must be worded very differently before

I could forward it.

On the 21st. January he sent in his resigna-

-tion as attached.

I do not remember his having said to me that

by accepting a position under Government he had forfeited a

right to his passage home. Dr. Moore who was present also has

no recollection of this.

20th. August, 1907.
