The Wardmaster is entitled to free furnished quarters, and, as his quarters are situated inside the Hospital buildings, and is obliged to stop there, it is in reality his home; but for some unknown reason, perhaps unknown to the Medical Department, light is not supplied, and the gas in my room was cut off; however, I always burned a large quantity of kerosene oil in the Hospital Camp, to which I was entitled under the heading of free furnished quarters. I, of course, had to supply my own oil for the Camp.
Some time in January, 1907, it was suggested that a separate gas meter be installed in my room. As kerosene oil is much cheaper, coupled with the fact that I would have been obliged to pay the monthly meter rent for the gas, I naturally declined the innovation. As a result of which, on the 11th January 1907, the Hon. Dr Atkinson directed the Medical Officer in charge of the Infectious Diseases Hospital to see that in future the Wardmasters (the plural term was used, but as I was the only one)...
