Sir,
I have the honour to ack the receipt
of your telegram of Aug 8th, enquiring
whether the ruling as to the payment of
sterling salaries at the rate of 2/- to
the dollar applies to the Railway staff.
2 I telegraphed to you on the 9th instant
that the answer to this question was in
the negative.
3 The Railway staff have all been engagėl
exchange value quite recently while the dollar has been
high, the salaries were thened DIDE,
presumably, fixed with due regard to
the rate of exchange and on a scale
to provide
which was considered adequate remuneration

for the work performed.
