I have the honour to ack the receipt
of Mr May's desp No 188 of July 22nd in
which he proposed that the project of
building quarters for the Medical Officer
in charge of Victoria Gaol should be aband-
oned and that that officer should be given a house allowance of $720 a year and re-
quired to find his own quarters within ten
minutes journey of the Gaol.
2 I am willing to agree to the
proposed allowance', which will of course,
be pensionable, on the understanding that
it is not in any case to be drawn by the
substantive holder of the post except when
he is actually discharging the duties of
the office. While he is on leave, it will
be drawn by the officer who acts in his
place, provided that that officer is
required to change his residence in order
to be near the gaol. If he is not required
to do so,
the allowance will lapse to the
Treasury.
