The novelty of the experiment had worn off, or possibly because the results to the students were not all that they had anticipated, a considerable number of those originally enrolled failed to present themselves after the New Year holidays. Sixty-nine new students joined, but the total enrolment at the commencement of the second term amounted to 243 only, compared with a total of 288 in December and 261 in January respectively, who were regularly attending the classes.
4. It must, however, be remembered that the scheme has not as yet passed the experimental stage, and that the question of its final organization has necessarily had to wait until a sufficient indication had been obtained of the measure of support which would be accorded to it by the student class.
5. The results already obtained are, I consider, such as to justify a reasonable anticipation that the classes will play a permanent and most useful part in forming and in supplying a demand, more especially among the Mercantile Community, for a course of study of a more advanced nature than it is at present possible to obtain in the Colony.
