Referring to Sir Matthew Nathan's Confidential Despatch of the 9th. May, 1906, I have the honour to state that Mr. A. J. Reed, Accountant in the Post Office, has declined to accept a Sterling Salary of £300 rising to £345 per annum on the ground that the high rate of exchange and the privilege rates of leave pay and pension to which he is entitled make his present emoluments slightly more attractive than the scale of salary offered to him. He has at the same time renewed his application to be placed on the higher scale of £360 rising to £450 per annum, which has been approved in the case of Mr. H. Dixon, Superintendent of the Money Order Office.
2.
The post of Accountant ranks next in seniority in the Department to that of Assistant Postmaster-General and the duties attached to it are slightly more onerous than and equally responsible with those of Mr. H. Dixon.

THE EARL OF ELGIN, K.G.,
