since the beginning of 1902 has been at the rate of £200

Taking query (c) first as it is

dealt with first in the evidence Inspector Brett gave

before the Commission, I have to observe that Inspector

Brett has in his letter of the 10th ultimo failed to make

any more satisfactory explanation of the state of his

wife's Savings Bank Account than he was able to offer the

Commissioners. He refers again to the Perkins Fund of £93.

But this sum was remitted to England on the 3rd of

October, 1904, while Mrs. Brett's Savings Bank Account was

not closed till the 13th of January, 1905. On the 9th of

January, 1905, $1,400 was transferred from it to Mr. Brett's

current account, and on the 13th of January, 1905,

$1,217.86 was transferred to the same account.

From Inspector Brett's account

with the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank it appears that on the

first date he purchased a draft on the International Bank

at 4 months sight for £160 ($1,625.89) and on the second

date he drew a cheque for $1,348.09 for passages for his

wife and himself to England.
