readjust the salaries of the Overseers in the Public Works Department, of certain of the Inspectors in the Sanitary Department, of the Subordinate European Staff in the Post Office and of certain of the Lightkeepers, and Your Lordship has now under consideration suggestions made by Sir Matthew Nathan for increasing the emoluments of the Engineers in the Public Works Department.
I may further quote the particular case of Mr. P. N. H. Jones, Assistant Director of Public Works, whose salary was under the authority of Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No. 294 of the 13th August, 1903, raised very shortly after his arrival in the Colony from £600 to £720 per annum, the equivalent of a Cadet's Sterling Salary in Class II, to £720 to $810 per annum, the equivalent of a Cadet's dollar salary in the same class, the ground for the grant of this increase being that owing to the introduction of the Sterling Scheme his original salary was less than that of a junior Officer in the same Department.
