entirely and am going to base my calculations on an even division by mileage.
This Railway enters into competition with water carriage in various places along its length. The Chief Station is Canton, to which place the carriage by water is extremely low and as I said before some inducement such as greater speed must be held out to draw traffic to the line. The number of coolies travelling however is so large that a very small profit per mile mounts up to a good sum of money and for reasons stated above this division of profits for this traffic must be by mileage. I will enter into figures later on.
Another centre of passenger traffic for which I have got figures is San Chun a town of some importance about one mile over the frontier in Chinese territory. The fare by steamer from Hong Kong is 30 cents. The first part of the journey is by steam launch and then as the tide very often does not allow of the steamer reaching the landing stage, passengers have to tranship into a stern wheel boat. The landing stage is about a mile from the town. This is a place to which much higher rates per mile can be charged and yet easily get all the passengers. In the first place owing to shallow water it sometimes takes a whole day to go from Hong Kong to Sam Chun, and then the passengers have to walk about a mile. The Railway will bring passengers there in about 75 minutes and land them much near the village. The distance from Hong Kong is about 23 miles of which only one mile is on the Chinese Section. For this reason the British Section must have the power to quote a high rate say 14 cents per mile for 3rd. class passengers.
Shek Lung is in a similar position, but I have not been able to obtain any figures for the traffic between Hong Kong and this place. At present anyone wanting to travel between Shek Lung and Hong Kong must tranship at Wangpoo and would probably have to pass through Canton,
There is another place to which a fair number of passengers go
