Government House,
Hongkong, 23rd May, 1907.
My Lord,
No. 19660
In continuation of my Confidential Despatch of the 27th ultimo, I have the honour to transmit for Your Lordship's consideration the enclosed copy of a letter from the Chamber of Commerce on the subject of the condition of the currency in China.
2. I entirely concur in the remarks made by the Chamber who show strong reasons for the urgency of reform in the currency of China and I would again urge that steps be taken to induce the Chinese Government to fulfil their obligations in this matter. The present condition is seriously affecting not only the trade of this Colony but the resources of all classes of its population, and the situation is the more irksome because the Colony, owing to her geographical and commercial position, is powerless.
RIGHT HONOURABLE
THE EARL OF ELGIN, K.G.,
&C...
80.
