Auditor to have an experienced Assistant to conduct the bulk of the work involved, as it is obviously necessary that no expenditure should be incurred faster than can be properly accounted for and certified as correct by a proper audit within a reasonable period.
4. In addition to the above I have also to enclose for consideration copies of two further reports by the Local Auditor on the subject generally of requiring two extra clerks one to assist in the work of his Department, and the other to assist in the Railway Audit.
The first clerk referred to was temporarily engaged in March last with the approval of Sir Matthew Nathan on a salary of $720 to $900 by $60 biennially for the purpose of devoting half of his time to the Railway Accounts and the remaining half to the ordinary work of the Colony.

It was intended to report this matter to Your Lordship in connection with the Estimates for 1908 but I now take this opportunity of requesting Your Lordship's approval of the appointment, the post to be considered a permanent one for the reasons shown by the Local Auditor who states that it is necessary under present conditions
