Sir,

Public Works Department,

Hongkong, March 13th., 1907.

I have the honour to apply for an increase to my present salary of £480 per annum on the grounds that the work which I am doing and have done for the past three years as Executive Engineer to the Tytam Works merits it.

I would remind you that both the Tytam Tuk Schemes, First and Second Sections, have been designed, and the former carried out, practically without the aid of a Consulting Engineer.

The responsibility for the designs and the carrying out of the works, though primarily devolving on you, must also be mine and in addition I have had to instruct a Chinese Contractor in the methods of doing work to which he was quite unaccustomed.

That these works have been well carried out I know that you are aware and the credit for them is largely due to the Contractor for his willingness to learn and his perseverance.
