Sir,
I most respectfully acknowledge your letter of the 5th instant received by me on the 8th instant at 2 p.m. To the several allegations set forth in your letter I humbly beg to hand to you the following replies:-
(1). On the morning of the 6th March, 1907, suffering as I was from fever and ague prior to going out to duty I took a dose of phenacetin and suffering as I do from a weak heart I took a glass of gin to counteract the action of the phenacetin. I went to office and saw Mr. Tooker and afterwards went on with my work on the Kowloon Roads.
(2). On the 11th March, 1907, I was still suffering from fever and ague it having continued off and on from the 8th to the 11th instant I went to office and handed in a number of Bills to Mr. Tooker which he received and signed for I afterwards went on with my duties on Kowloon Roads still feeling unwell.
(3). On the 13th March, 1907, I found myself too ill to attend office from a fresh attack of fever and remained at home sick in bed hoping to be fit for duty next day but feeling no better I went into the Government Civil Hospital suffering from fever and debility. I did not write to my Department as I should have done being unable to do so. I much regret the causes of your having to address me upon a painful subject.
I throw myself upon the mercy of His Excellency
