8. But in addition to his statement, Mr. Guterres brought forward other evidence tending to rebut the general charges against him. Three witnesses were present before the Council, and gave oral testimony tending to show that it was not credible that Guterres could have committed the offences alleged against him. Similar evidence was given by Superintendent de la Garde of the Sailors’ Home, whose duties were performed only a few yards away from Guterres, who also stated that he was usually present when Mr. Antrobus, Mr. Cuz, Mr. Lucas, Sir F. Hopwood, Mr. Churchill, and The Earl of Elgin were being paid off, and who could have failed to notice such irregularities as those charged against Guterres. The latter also attached 25 letters from various persons to the same effect.
It is also worth mentioning that Capt. Runcie, formerly Harbour Master at Hongkong, has called at this Office to make representations on behalf of Guterres.
