Dear Mor Guttères

The undersigned begs to offer you his sincerest sympathies in your trouble, caused by the scandalous and unfounded charges brought against your character, which he wishes to state that he believes to be as baseless as they are false.

During my ten years' experience of you, in your special capacity of receiving and paying off his crew at this port, I am proud to testify that I have never once seen, or known, you guilty of the irregularities with which you have been charged. Such a charge is an insult to your honesty and integrity. I have known you throughout that time as a man of unimpeachable character, and I can confidently aver that the whole business has been done with perfect correctness, and satisfaction in all concerned, and passage after passage, as far as I know, had there been any dissatisfaction on the part of the shippers or others, I should surely have heard of it; I also wish to state that I have myself brought the money for paying off the crew to your office, with the necessary small change for the purpose.

I sincerely hope, Wort Futterer, that the engineer who has made these false charges will be punished for the pain and position in which it has placed you, and that for many years to come you will continue to hold the position you have so long and honourably held.

Yours very sincerely,

Chubb
