With regard to the man who brought me the petition regarding Guterres to sign, the Captain of the "Mercedes", I was told;
"he asked me to sign a petition for Guterres being reinstated, I said that knowing what had been going on in the Shipping Office for many years it was the last thing I would think of doing. He said that everyone out here took squeezes as a recognised thing, and as it was a case of a white man against two boarding house masters the former should be supported".
