A. There are two staircases there, one for the three floors and one for the first floor. Was the staircase altered?
A. I never knew about that.
Q. Was a new staircase put up?
A. I don't know.
Q. When a new staircase is put up, is it not your business to know it?
A. I refer to the office and I make inquiries and if I cannot get a satisfactory answer I refer to the senior inspector and it goes before him.
Q. I want to know if he hurt made inquiries to see if the staircase was altered.
Mr. May (to defendant): Have you got any witnesses?
A. I have one that the money was paid in full and I don't owe him anything. He was my interpreter when the money was paid over.
His Excellency (to Mr. Chatham): Have you any knowledge of the staircase?
