It is here, the second item, a payment, on the top margin.

Mr. May:

I think it is clear now.

333

His Excellency: It was all repaid eventually.

Mr. Howett: Neither of these payments had any reference to the $25.

Defendant: That has been paid back on the instalment plan, every Month $5 and $10 and $5.

Mr. May: You had better put that to the witness.

Defendant:

Your Excellency, this is not the manager and he knows nothing about it.

His Excellency: Well, ask him what he is and ask him where the other man is.

Defendant:

I know the chief accountant because I paid my bill to him.

His Excellency: You might ask these questions for him, Mr. Attorney.

Mr. Gompertz: Is it not a fact that the inspector paid you back that $25 by $5 instalments every month?

A. No.

Defendant: Do you remember one afternoon at the head of the stairs when I paid you at the table in the back room ten dollars and you wanted a commission on the difference between Hongkong currency and the Chinese - sixty cents?

A. No.

Q. Why has that other person not been here this afternoon that received the money, the manager?

A. The large man. He is a very heavy-set man.

A. Which one?

Defendant:

I am the manager.

He has only lately been manager then.
