Mr. May: And does it not go on to say that there are still 3 taels 6 owing?
332
The Interpreter: It is this 3 taels 6 that is read out.
Mr. May: That is in the book?
The Interpreter: It is in the body of the book.
Mr. May (to witness): And that receipt is a copy of the entry in the book?
A. Yes.
His Excellency: How do I understand whether the receipt finishes the whole thing the $10 or whether $5 is still meant to be paid?
The Interpreter: Yes, it is finished completely, but there is the first total of receipt on the top margin. The two taels odd tall with the two taels odd in the book here and the 3 taels 6 in the top margin tallies with the 3 taels 6 in the receipt.
His Excellency: Yes, but altogether there was 7 taels 27
The Interpreter: He refers then to the first item because it was carried over from the front to the back of the book and that says "deducting what has been received there is due 3 taels 6" and that receipt of 3 taels 6 on the top refers to this 3 taels 6 in the body of the book.
His Excellency: And the whole thing has been paid?
A. The whole thing has been paid.
Mr. May: When was the outstanding $5 repaid?
A. On the 5th moon 9th day.
Q. Of the 82nd year?
A. Last year, yes.
Q. That is the 13th of June, 1906. The $5 ran on until June, 1906.
His Excellency: And eventually the ten dollars was all paid back, the ten dollars having been borrowed in April, 1906?
A. Yes.
Mr. May: Is that repayment entered in the book - the 30th June?
