Charge (a) in the Acting Colonial Secretary's letter of the 19th January last is important because the present of poultry succeeded the incident which forms the subject of charge (b) in the same letter, and the additional charges preferred in the Colonial Secretary's letter of the 18th ultimo, the material for which was not in the hands of the Government at the time that the original charges were framed, were added to explain the receipt which Mr. Amy produced in answer to charge (b) in the letter of the 19th January last.

To make the matter of the receipt and the book entries clearer than appears in the transcript of the evidence, I attach a translation of the receipt for comparison with the translation of the extract from the Ledger which accompanied the letter to Mr. Amy of the 18th ultimo. The receipt is for a sum of Taels 2,009 ($2.79) and for a further sum of Taels 3.6 ($5) while the extract from the Ledger shows that in addition to these sums a further sum of Taels 3.6 ($5) was also repaid.
