Chan Hok Ting, the first witness, was called. He said: I am the master of the Yik Lee contractors, of 42 East Street. I know Mr Conolly; he is an inspector in the Saiyingpun district. I live in Taipingshan above my shop. Three or four years ago, I had some houses to limewash in Third Street. There were 36 houses. I limewashed these 36 houses properly and asked the inspector to go there to inspect them; a junior inspector whose name I do not remember. He inspected the houses and wrote me a notice informing me that the limewashing was not done properly. I limewashed again, and it was also not done properly. I asked the inspector to point out the faults to me, what was not done properly, and he said he was not my foreman. I then went to see Inspector Lamhaka, and I asked him if I could give a present to Mr Conolly, and he said yes, you had better speak to him yourself.
I went to the house of this inspector, and he was very pleased to give me drinks; at the time, his wife was there. Mr Tam spoke to him first, and he spoke to me afterwards. I sat next to him in a chair, and I explained that my limewashing was not done properly, and promised him a present if he said what was not done properly. I spoke in English. He said, "Very well, I will visit your place next day," and he came next day and visited the kitchens of the houses, and told me several had to be limewashed again.
The witness was asked if he could speak enough English to give his evidence in English (it was stated that he could not).
