PARAPHRASE
(ROUGH DRAFT JAN 28/07)

TELEGRAM. Governor Sir M. Nathan to the Earl of Elgin.
(Received Colonial Office 9.40 a.m. 28th January, 1907.)
360
With reference to my telegram of the 26th of January, if it is not too late May would like to cancel his acceptance and I should like it to be cancelled if this will not in any way interfere with his future career. We are anxious to continue working together for the benefit of the Colony and beyond the fact that the Ceylon appointment would be promotion to him its conditions are not such as would compensate him for leaving Hong Kong.
Following telegram private.
If his cancelling his acceptance would militate against his being offered a governorship in the future, please allow matters to remain as they are.
