Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
F. S. Earsay
Commander of "Wem" and her ship
5.5.85
I have great pleasure in sending you this, and I am sure the rest of our commanders would do the same, and as to your requiring gratuity, you never have in my case hinted at requiring one.
I was in her on the last trip done in Sydney, "Australian".
At times when a man has been troublesome or in liquor, you have spoken sharply and in case of Europeans would not discharge them until sober.
I have sent a lesser, or sent an officer with him, and have never even heard from any of our Commanders or officers, that you were suspected of cheating the men.
As a rule we discharge & love you so mere to ships every line months.
