Referring to your letter of the 10th inst., we shall be obliged if you will let us know in course whether the court which sentenced the crew of this vessel to a period of imprisonment was, so far as you know, competent to try the offence with which the crew was charged, i.e. that the sentence was pronounced by the proper tribunal having jurisdiction.
