Mr. Carnegie to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received August 30.) R 22 NOV OF

Peking, August 30, 1906.

(No. 160.) (Telegraphic.) P.

IN reply to your telegram No. 154 of the 25th instant, I have the honour to report that His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton, to whom I repeated your telegram No. 139, asked me to await his telegraphic statement of the claims of the ship and wounded before taking action as indicated in the last paragraph. To this I agreed, but said that, until authorized by you, no claims should be presented,

Yesterday His Majesty's Consul-General telegraphed to me as follows:--

"The claims filed are, in round figures: 12,000 dollars for actual loss of ship and crew; 50,000 dollars claimed by the captain for injuries; 24,000 dollars by the engineer; 4,500 dollars by the three watchmen; and 150,000 dollars for consequential loss of ship. I am forwarding details to you and also to the Foreign Office direct by post."

In accordance with your instructions, I am communicating with the Commander-in-chief.
