August 4th I had the honour to address you on the auhfeel
of similar action taken by the Board of Commerce in re-
gard to railexys in Cheklang and Kiangtu, which action
contravened the torms of greements concluded by the
Chinese Government with the British A Chinese Corpurte
ation. The Board of Nurserce having openly supported,
and obtained the Imperial Sanction to, proposals Viol-
ating soloan contracte with a British firta in respect
of railway undertakings in Yiangsu and Thekiang, there
in all the more reason to credit the information which
has reached me through the Governor of Hongkong and
His Majesty'■ Contul General in regard to the anton-
Thumpon schema.
In view of the negotiations which are about to com-
mence between the Wai Wo Pu and the Agent of the Pritish
& Chinese Corporation, Mr.. Bland, in regard to the
Canton-Kowloon railway, it is of the first importance
that there should be no sisımderstanding in this mat-
tar.
