Mr. Carnegie to Sir Edward Grey,-(Received July 18.)

(No. 139.) (Telegraphic.)

Peking, July 18, 1906.

I HAVE the honour to inform you, with reference to your telegram No. 125, that the Chinese Government have communicated to me by note that they have notified the Canton Viceroy that the Wai-wu Pu, together with a representative who is to be sent to Peking from Canton, will negotiate the Canton-Kowloon Railway with a representative of the British and Chinese Corporation.

My inquiries respecting the Whampoa scheme have as yet elicited no reply from the Wai-wu Pu.

The above information has been sent to Hong Kong.
