I was working in the pantry and saw some men chasing the watchman. Then Doctor MacDonald came out thinking they were fighting. He tried to stop them. Then more pirates came up and ran after the Doctor.

J. W. Seggie, Chief Engineer, stated:
We had just finished dinner and were standing outside the door. Then we heard an unusual noise and thought somebody was running amok. We saw a Chinaman attack a watchman and then they came as a swarm of bees. We doubled back to get on the bridge. Then we met another gang coming round the other side. We came back again and entered the saloon. As soon as we got in, the Captain said he was shot. Then Dr. MacDonald paid attention to the Captain, and I shut both doors and the starboard windows. Before I got to the port windows, they were there and fired about half a dozen shots.
Then we got under the table. Then they threw in a "stink-pot" and the fumes cleared us out. The Captain, Dr. MacDonald, and one of the watchmen left on the starboard side, and I on the port side.
