Captain Joslin, duly sworn, stated:-
Had dinner at 6.30 p.m. About 7 or 7.10 p.m. we came outside with the Doctor, and I saw the Indian Watchman running for all he was worth followed by a Chinaman trying to get the Indian's revolver. I tried to get his revolver but could not do it. I believe I knocked the Chinaman down; then the Chinaman made a run aft and the first thing I knew he shot at me point blank with his own revolver. Dr. MacDonald was alongside and I said I was shot. The Doctor said "come inside" and tried to probe the wound. Then they started to fire at us. Then I said "it is no use stopping here", and I fell under the table. Then they threw a "stink-pot" into the cabin and then we got out on the starboard side. The Doctor said "lay down". I was exhausted; the Doctor lay down to avoid shots; shots were flying all over the ship. Then a Chinaman came along and put a shot through the Doctor and I fell into the cabin to lay down dead. Then they came in and said "chun chu" (Captain) and kicked me to see whether I was alive and seeing the wound said "he is dead". They kicked me three or four times and took a ring off my finger. I lay down quietly and they came in again and gave me several more kicks. Then they took the ship I don't know where. Then they broke up Dr. MacDonald's gear and some medicine. The Chinese got hold of my jacket and pulled it and the pants off and they saw my wound and said "he is dead". Then after a while I heard the telegraph and windlass go and concluded they had left. Then the Chief Engineer came to me.
