With reference to my Note of the gun alleged to belong to the Hsiang-shan militia, which has been seized by the Viceroy of Canton,
I have the honour to state that on February 3rd, I instructed the Consul-General by telegram to request the

he telegraphed that the gun was in charge of a guard-boat, which was supported by two
gunboats anchored in the vicinity of the godown yard, and that
he was again remonstrated with by the Viceroy requesting its release.
Today I received another telegram from his Excellency stating that the Viceroy maintained
that the gun belonged to "Hou Jun-yen, disputing Pêng Hua-
...., and that the mount should be sent to Canton for examination.
