With reference to your letter 1417/1905 of the
17th instant, respecting the petition addressed by the
inhabitants of the new territory of Hongkong to the
Chinese Government in regard to the land taxes, I am
directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit to you,
for the information of the Secretary of State for the
Colonies, a copy of a despatch from Sir E. Satow on
the subject.
I am to state that a copy of the Law Officers Re-
port, enclosed in your letter 44905/1905 of the 2nd
instant, as to the National Status of persons inhabit-
ing the territory in question, was forwarded to Sir E.
Satow in a despatch which has crossed the communica-
tion now received from him.
