Sir,
I have today examined Mr. J. Ahern, Prison Warder, Hong Kong, and have the honour to report that he had acute rheumatic Fever in 1879. Since then he has been subject to rheumatism, more especially since he came to Hong Kong in 1895. Last year he was in hospital on this account for 110 days and this year 63 days.
Since coming home he has suffered a great deal and is now lame in the left leg and in the right hand.
I consider that this man is not likely to recover permanently and that he cannot be relied on to be physically fit at all times to discharge his duties, more particularly in a climate such as that of Hong Kong. I therefore recommend that he be retired from the service.
