Only one, Sir. What is the lapse of time between the original entry in the book being made, and the alteration, how many months, roughly ?

What is the date of the original entry?
A. On the 24th November last year.

A. And when was the alteration made ?
The next day after the notice was received.
r Sercombe Smith:-
But when did you receive the notice ?

How many months ago was that altered, from this date ?
A. I cannot remember, about two months.
r Hewett:-
A. I cannot remember exactly, he says.

So roughly, there was about 9 or 10 months between the original entry having been made in the book, and the alteration ?
A. About that.
Atkinson:"
Q. What were the alterations you had made to your premises ?
A. A staircase and two windows, and two holes, not two windows.
Q. And did the Inspector tell you what was wrong with them, when he said they were not proper ?
A. The Inspector said if I had the staircase fixed against these two holes, it was illegal and not according to the plan.
Q. And did you think it was proper to arrange the matter by this payment to the Inspector, instead of making the necessary alterations ?
A. I did not think that. I intended to alter it. Because the Inspector told me that it would cost $50, so I altered my decision by paying him $10.
Q. Have you had any other dealings with this Inspector ?
A. No, not before this.
